Being a manager is no easy task, but some managers are better than others because of their own innate competence and skill. How are you perceived in your post?
QUIZ: Are YOU an Effective Manager?
Here is your chance to find out!!
For each statement, select a reply that DEFINITELY applies to you now.
SCORING KEY
80-90: An Excellent Manager You have all the hallmarks of a people person of the highest order. Your colleagues obviously value you and respect you and are even thankful that you are in charge. Great leadership!
64-79: A Very Good Boss You are extremely competent at what you do, though sometimes you are more focused on the goals than the staff. But it is the staff who will make it happen for you, and they always need your attention and approval. However, you are a solid leader who sometimes has self doubts.
44-63: An Uncertain Leader You enjoy the trappings of power and are moderately successful in managing others. But you have areas of low confidence which often lets you seek approval of your team which then gives mixed messages about your management. You need greater self belief in your abilities that you can do the job and you really don't have to 'prove ' anything.
28-43: A Weak Manager. You have the right approach most times, and your intentions are good, but your low confidence tends to encourage a divide-and-rule atmosphere with clear favourites. Strong staff are likely to wrest control from you as you are uncertain about your authority and often show it. This tends to lead to lesser respect for you. You probably need more self-motivation or management training. But your staff would feel a little uneasy with your current style and competence.
15-27: A Poor Manager You are clearly out of your depth in such a position, perhaps more suitable to managing things than people, as you are apt to neglect your staff, to seek approval from them, to be erratic in your management and not assertive enough in executing your job. This tends to lead to lots of staff frustration and discomfort. It would be surprising if they are not voting with their feet as well because it wouldn't be a motivating environment for them! You would definitely need more training for this kind of supervisory role.
